I searched and didn't find a thread on this problem. I have a 2004 Carter 2906 with 6.5 hp Tecumseh engine and TC20 Torque Converter. After a few months the torque converter was locking up causing the engine to stall when you stopped and it stayed locked so you couldn't restart it. You could free it by tapping on it with a hammer but it would do it again. I removed it, cleaned it, lubed with dry lube Moly disulfide, and after an hour or so of driving the same thing happened. So I bought a new clutch at the dealer. The new clutch does the same thing and it's been that way for 4 years. So basically I have a $1600 go kart that never worked right from day 1 because the TC design is defective? The TC is designed so the pulley slides on the shaft but it often binds on the shaft. My daughter is 13 now and she and her friends only use it for an hour or so a month in the summer so I bet it has a maximum of 20 hours on it since new. Does Carter have a fix for this design defect? Please help me. Thanks.

Well I talked to Tech Support at Carter and he had a lot of ideas that didn't apply to my situation and most I had already tried. Seems like this is a problem that doesn't normally occur until the kart is older and the TC is worn, rusty, or dirty. He suggested checking the belt for 1 1/2 - 2" slack so I will check that but my belt is still like new. He also suggested putting sewing machine oil on the 2 pegs that the springs ride on, so I will try that.

I have the problem with my newest Yerf Dog 3203 which has the model 20 comet tav, as of last weekend I tore it down, cleaned it and used comets lubricate on it, I did find a ruff edge on the part of it that I filled down, we have rode it twice with no problems, Hopefully that cured the problem! I will let you know!

Eric B: it sounds like you have to keep looking at those driver units to figure out what's wrong with them. I'd also take a look at the belt. I doubt it's the belt though.
