OK, it's time for the first oil change on my kart. Since it's used, i haev no idea how long ago was the last oil change or what brand or weight was used.

According to the online manual I found, looks like I should use 10w30 this time of year. My question is - what kind? Should I use regular automotiev oil (Castrol), synthetic (Mobil 1 or Royal Purple) or some sort of "motorcycle" oil.

I purchased a tach / hour meter to keep me on schedule after this change.

thanks

i prefer Mobil One, i have heard that royal purple can cause excess carbon build up on the head, not sure if this is true though. regular castrol or penzoil would probably be just fine if you governor is still on and working properly. mine is not so with the high rpms o prefer a good synthetic. I beleive amzoil is also good, but a little more difficult to get than Mobil One. Im sure many others will have opinions here.

i use castrol in my buggy, works fine

Royal Purple is THE best, it cannot cause carbon build up, it is king's oil.

Dont mess with the best........ oil, but do use the best oil, despite that it is so expensive......

Nah go kart isnt worth it, just dont buy walmart brand, get a synthetic and youll be fine!

this is just waht i hear from the guys over on 4cycle
heres a link http://karting.4cycle.com/showthread.php?t=61044
i veiw them as being pretty good about stuff, i've never heard about this in a full size engine though. RP is supposed to give a few HP on the dyno. good stuff, my dads got it all the way around in his mustang (rear dif, engine, tranny ect.)
castrol is what Batman reccomended me, i've just always had good luck with mobil one
it really comes down to personal preference as long as you stick with a good name brand, like castrol, mobil, pennzoil, ect.
Ben
[EDIT] on second look at that page i must not have read it all before. one guy said that most of the problems occur with engines running on methanol, which would definitly explain it.

Well, my neighbor came over when he saw me tinkering with the kart and brought me 6 quarts of RP 10w30. Says he uses it in all his 4 wheelers and his pickup. Well, since the price was FREE, guess what I am going to try out?

My question is this - how the heck do you drain the oil without making a huge mess? I bought one of those adapters with a hose to put on for the next oil change, but how to do this first one? The engine sits back from the edge of the body so I guess its just got to be messy? Any tips or tricks out there?

Depending on your setup, it may be easy enough to remove the 4 or so bolts holding then engine on and then draining is easy. If not, then get a big pan and do your best to catch it all. It makes a mess but I guess thats part of it.

I was able to use some tin foil to help contain some of the mess, just do it in the woods or on the grass so that any that gets on the ground wont get on the driveway. I was able to just get an extension (a tec part) and that solved my probelm and works quite well, you could make your own too, just using some pipe and a pipe cap.

WOOO WAIT ON DAMM MINUTE HERE!!!!!

DO IT IN THE WOODS....ARE YOU NUTS???????

NOT ONLY IS THAT TOTALLY ILLEGAL BUT IT IS TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO TURN ON YOUR SINK TAP AND DRINK A BIG GLASS OF USED MOTOR OIL?

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO FIND OUT THAT THE STEAK YOU JUST ATE OR THE CORN AND BAKED POTATOES YOU HAD WITH IT HAS NOW CUASED YOU TO HAVE SERIOUS MEDICAL PROBLEMS BECAUSE THEY WERE COMTAMINATED BY COMPONENTS OF USED MOTOR OIL?

BEN YOU REALLY NEED TO CHECK YOURSELF MAN.

HOPE I RUN INTO YOU ONE DAY ILL MAKE SURE I HAVE ABOUT 500 GALLONS OF USED OIL TO DUMP IN YOUR HOUSE....WHY YOU ASK IN YOUR HOUSE???

WELL ANIMALS LIVE OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE, AND YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM DELIBERATELY DESTROYING THEIR HOME, SO IT WOULD GO TO FIGURE YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH SOMEONE ELSE DESTOYING YOUR HOME.

Well, as it turns out I just put a large metal floor pan under my kart and my oil pan on that and let 'er rip. Yeah, I made a good mess in my garage but no environmental impact.

On a weird note, it took less than a quart to fill the engine back up. Looks like I got enough free RP for 5 more changes!

GREAT FOR YOU

GLAD TO HEAR YOU DIDN'T TAKE THE LAME LAZY WAY THE BENL SUGGESTED

I HAVE TO WONDER WHAT THE MAINE EPA OFFICE WOULD THINK OF HIS COMMENTS AND ACTIONS?

Sorry, i should clarify what i meant.
I did not mean dump ALL the oil right onto the ground. I used the tin foil to keep it off the frame, and help funnel it into a funnel, where it would then drain into an old motor oil container. Then i bring it to the transfer station and dyump iot in their waste oil tank. I am not TRYING to destroy the environment, i just figure a few drrops of oil on the grass/dirt is better than an oil spot on the driveway. a large metal pan would work better but i dont have one that my mo would let me use to catch oil, she says it isnt sanitary, lol.
sorry for the confusion.

Hey guys...cool it okay?

Benl obviously wouldnt suggest that one should dump a half quart of old oil in the woods.

Dochemi, watch the language and stuff...should have asked him to clarify what he meant by his post before jumping off the deep end...

EXCUSE ME RED...BUT.....

LANGUAGE WHAT LANGUAGE?

AND I WAS GOING ON WHAT HE WROTE.....I AM A VERY RESPOSIBLE INDIVIDUAL WHEN IT COMES TO THE ENVIROMENT....

AND ONE DROP OR ONE QUART IT IS WRONG.

HOW WAS I JUMPING OFF THE DEEP END? DEFENDING THE ENVIROMENT?

I obviously take the enviroment more seriously then some here do.
