How to remove a Torque Converter

Postby Offroadkarter » Tue Aug 22, 2006 4:48 pm

alot of people cannot remove the driver pully of a Torque Converter (TC) because "the driver pully spins" heres how to get it off.........

Special thanks to Schatten for the pics of his yerf dog!

Step 1: Remove Torque Converter Guard (if equipped)

Step 2: Remove spark plug

Image

Step 3: Insert rope 10-12" in spark plug hole. (make shure teh piston is at the bottom of the case)

Image

Step 4: Turn driver pully until rope jams the piston

Step 5: Now that the piston is jammed, the Driver pulley will not turn and removal of bolt begins. (if still spinning, repeat Step 3 and 4 but insert rope {flaxulation} until it works)

With the driver pully removed, now its time to remove the driven pully!

Step 1: with belt out of way apply the brake (or block the wheels, as long as they dont spin)

Step 2: Remove the nut Slowly! (the driven is spring loaded, not careful and half the assembly will shoot at you!!!!!)

Image

Step 3: with bolt off, slide the driven pully off.

And your done! the Torque Converter Has sucessfully been removed! cheers

Now just reverse the process for assembly.

If you still have problems, feel free to PM me and i will help you out in any way i can. good luck and hope this helps!

Nice job, I just dont like the idea of putting anything into the cylinder. Most will come off without doing that step. Glenn

sometimes they do, but if it is the first time being taken off, then it might be a bit tricky.

wait you don't have to put no rope in the engine. put a wrench on it and hold the the belt and slap the wrench a few times and it comes off.
but awesome job on the picts and info.

ok some one can pm me about this because i have done this so many times to so many of them and this way is way to hard.
you use your hand like a impact wrench. and than you will not have to put anything in the engine.

I would have to rank this #1 on this Forum (so far) for great detailed step-by-step pics with text.

Great effort and attention to detail to all involved.

for all the people who are saying im wrong or inefficiant, there are many ways of removing a torque converter setup, this is just one of the easiest ways. it works on CVT's and TC's and possibly centruficial clutches also.

Postby hornet5500 » Thu Sep 21, 2006 12:29 pm

ok so basically its left hand threads so you have to hold onto the converter and then torque it to the left...
travius make sure not to put it on backwards when u replace it

Hey Ork great job to bad you are not in the south fla area I would give you a Job in one of my stores

but one thing that has to be done when you re install the TAV is reset the preload on the spring if anyone is interested this is how you do it.

SETTING SPRING PRELOAD:

Instructions on disassembly & reassembly of a symmetrical & asymmetrical torque converter system. (20 , 30 &40 Series)

Remove the driven unit from the machine and lay it flat on a work area.

DISASSEMBLE:

1) With the spring facing up, remove the retaining ring from the end of the post (Caution: this spring should be under pressure)

2) Lift up the fixed cam (the one with the three holes and spring), 40 series only one

3) Inspect the insert buttons, (one on each side of the moveable cam)
If worn or missing, replace all 6 buttons, 40 series only 3 Use a pair of pliers to remove any remaining buttons and press in new ones.

REASSEMBLE:

1) Insert the spring tang in the number one hole of the fixed cam, place the spring and cam down over the post of the fixed post and only push the fixed cam down about ¼â€
